The last time Izzy saw his mother’s trailer was through the rear window of a Dodge Aries driven by a social worker with the Florida Department of Children and Families. He was four years old. He spent the remainder of his childhood bouncing around the state foster care system. Always the outsider, introverted and awkward, he assumed he was exempt from things like friendship and love … until he met Scarlett McGhee.
Pharaoh Sinclair was born in a women’s correctional facility. The illegitimate child of an unknown father and a crackhead mother. He grew up on the sidewalks of the Azalea Arms housing project, where gunshots and police sirens were as commonplace as the stench of the neighboring landfill. Molded by hustlers and pushers, with the dope game in his DNA, the lone soft spot in his concrete heart was reserved for his baby sister, Symphony. But could he protect her from the same streets that raised them?
From the sugar-white sand dunes of Pensacola Beach to the murderous Arthur G. Dozier reform school, from strip clubs to emergency rooms, from trap houses to courthouses to prison cells, On the Shoulders of Giants chronicles the intersecting journeys of a foster kid and a project kid as they battle and stumble their way through adolescence into adulthood.
An exploration of race, part memoir, part coming-of-age, part thriller, part love story, this transcendent novel defies genre. A book within a book. More than a story, a living organism. A legacy. The only child of Ezra “Izzy” James.

On the Shoulders of Giants edition by Malcolm Ivey Literature Fiction eBooks

I never thought that Malcolm Ivey could ever write another novel that would outshine With Arms Unbound, but he did! On The Shoulders of Giants has captivated my mind. It has been over a week since I finished this book and I still find myself thinking of the characters as if they were an extension of my own family. Mr. Ivey does a fantastic job describing the characters and situations. I am a visual reader and there are very few books that allow me the ability to actually see what I read. If you have never been to Pensacola, you will feel as if you had by the time you are done with this book! You will not regret purchasing this page turning art. It is very well written: A wonderful mix of suspense, humor, and drama. Thank You Malcolm Ivey! I have learned so much from your work!

On the Shoulders of Giants edition by Malcolm Ivey Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

I received a complimentary copy of this book from Reading Deals in exchange for an honest review. First, it would be a mistake to think Ivey is writing only about one of our social problems. His characters suffer from many things--abandoned by parents caught up in the drug and criminal underworlds, like the main character, Izzy, they grow up in the Foster System, shown as a sort of training ground for prison, never breaking out of the system of institutional life. It's what they know, and what they got used to. Izzy is a prisoner before he is imprisoned. He learns not to trust anyone, not to dream, not to hope. Pharaoh, the other main character, also has an addicted mother, and a drug kingpin dad--both touching his life only tangentially, and only in order to use him, never to nurture or love. His one most precious connection, his innocent baby sister, dies in his arms at age nine, victim of a drive by shooting. This author knows the drug life, the criminal life, and prison life, well and intimately. And he writes it so well and so believably we learn to know it as well. What is remarkable about this story and these characters is that they achieve a kind of redemption, overcoming their terrible circumstances, and the bitter divisions of the world they inhabit, including those of race and education, and they do it pretty much on their own, with only a whisper, here and there, of any kind of grace. Their lives interlock in a most remarkable way, and they create their own kind of justice, and their own kind of highly original salvation. What might look to an outsider like the most bitter defeat, we come to see as a hard won triumph. The story is told. Working together they retrieve Izzy's three times destroyed manuscript, from his memory and Pharaoh's vision. Two seemingly utterly broken people create something new out of their own ashes. Gritty realism, the hardest of hard luck, the cruelest of circumstances, the worst kind of violence, the almost complete absence of love, and yet, these two men create a separate and unique path to what can only be called the fulfilment of their own humanity. Wonderful, gripping, rewarding book!
Another great book by Malcom Ivey! I fall in love with the characters and the writer each chapter. I would highly recommend his books to all ages.
You only need to learn and understand who Malcolm Ivy is to realise this is a book important to read. Written with a lot of insight. Take the time to read this. Become part of the population who understands instead of tagging cluelessly behind the crowd.
I really enjoyed it from the perspective that it showed the destructive power of drugs in our society. Everyone should read it.
Amazing story! I love the way Malcolm Ivey writes. You can put yourself in the characters shoes and understand their feelings even in situations you have never experienced personally. Such a genius writer. I hope the next book is in the works!!
This is the latest book written by Malcolm Ivey, and it is by far my favorite. As usual, once you begin reading one of his books, say goodbye to anything else you had planned; He keeps you on interested and on the edge of your seat from start to finish.
An interesting well done novel. It is difficult to determine where reality and fiction intersect. Perhaps this book may save some individuals from the lure of fantasy drug escape.
